Report: Knicks could fire coach Woodson by trade deadline

Stop us if you've heard this one before: the New York Knicks could soon fire head coach Mike Woodson.

We are Jack's complete lack of surprise.

Anyway, Woodson's chair, which has been Katy Perry levels of hot-and-cold this season, is reportedly hot once again. The Knicks are 19-29, stuck in 10th in the Eastern Conference and have lost back-to-back games, including a job-threatening loss to Milwaukee on Monday.

Earlier struggles saw Woodson get a stay of execution, either because of well-timed victories or Tyson Chandler's injury, but time is now of the essence. As such, the Knicks could have a now boss at the helm by the Feb. 20 trade deadline, according to NorthJersey.com:

When the door to the Knicks practice session opened Tuesday afternoon, a stream of players scurried out of the locker room before the media could ask a question.

You know what they say about a sinking ship? The rats desert the ship and the captain goes down with it — and coach Mike Woodson may be on his last days afloat.
...
And what they had to say wasn’t exactly reassuring — Woodson’s words not encouraging for the team’s fading chances and in particular, the usually positive Stoudemire’s words not encouraging for Woodson, whom one league source said could be removed before the Feb. 20 trade deadline.

Now, that sounds like a fairly tepid hot-seat report, but the Knicks are a notoriously leaky franchise when it comes to inside information. Often, where there's smoke, there's fire.

As Eye On Basketball points out, though, who the heck are the Knicks going to turn to? Who wants to take on a 19-29 team with enormous expectations, a meddling owner and a potentially-departing superstar? Firing the coach without an adequate replacement could amount to throwing a deck chair off of the Titanic.

But we suppose it's better than doing nothing on the Titanic.
