Embiid to undergo knee surgery

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will undergo surgery on his left knee in the upcoming days, the team announced Wednesday.

A timetable won't be established until after the surgery, ESPN's Marc Stein reports.

Embiid was already ruled out for the season earlier this month after an MRI revealed the 7-footer had a torn meniscus in his left knee.

It will be the third surgery of the 23-year-old's young career, having undergone surgery on his right foot in each of the previous two seasons.

Drafted No. 3 in 2014, Embiid has played just 31 games in his NBA career, and didn't make his NBA debut until October of this season.

Embiid was in the midst of a monster rookie season prior to the injury, averaging 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 2.1 assists on 46.6 percent shooting. Philadelphia has fared poorly without Embiid this season, going just 13-26 with the big man out of the lineup.
