Lakers set franchise low with 49-point loss to Mavericks

These aren't your father's Lakers, or even your older sibling's Lakers.

The once mighty Los Angeles Lakers hit a new low on Sunday as they set a franchise low in a 122-73 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Losing by 49 points to the Mavericks - who have twice as many losses as wins on the season - goes down as the worst loss in Lakers history.

Some of the lowlights for Los Angeles:

  • Lou Williams (15) and Jordan Clarkson (10) led the team in scoring. No other player finished in double-digits
  • No. 2 overall draft pick Brandon Ingram finished as a minus-45 in 36 minutes
  • Fellow rookie Ivica Zubac was a minus-29 in 19 minutes
  • The Lakers were outscored in every quarter, including by a ghastly 38-11 margin in the second

Lopsided losses are the new norm in Los Angeles since their fall from grace in 2012. The previous record for futility - a 48-point spanking by the Utah Jazz - was matched last season by largely the same roster.

To add insult to utter embarrassment, Sunday's loss marked the 11th anniversary of Kobe Bryant's 81-point game. Bryant's former teammates playing the role of the Toronto Raptors was a strange way to celebrate.
