Nets' Scola put off by NYC rental rates

Luis Scola was brought to the Brooklyn Nets as a stabilizing veteran presence for a team with a lot of holes in its roster. He's excited about being in New York City as well, but appears concerned about Gotham's high cost of living.

"I think New York is one of the best cities in the world," Scola told Marc Berman of the New York Post. "But I don't like the renting prices."

The average rent within the five boroughs is $3,262 a month, according to RentJungle.com. In Toronto, where Scola played last season for the Raptors, it's $1,339.

Scola is reportedly set to earn $5.5 million in 2016-17.

He told Berman he'll stick close to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the average monthly rent surpassed $3,000 for the first time in 2015 according to figures.

"It has to be in Brooklyn," Scola said. "How far can you go with the challenge of traffic? It’s a good opportunity for me and my family to live in the middle of the city, doing city life, walking to places, taking buses, riding a bike."

To be fair, Scola wouldn't be the first well-paid person to lament housing costs in New York. Unfortunately, a political movement solely based on that fact never had staying power.
