Mears, Newman to serve 15-minute penalties during Pocono practice

Jerome Miron / USA TODAY Sports

The teams of Casey Mears and Ryan Newman will have to serve 15-minute penalties during this weekend's first practice at Pocono Raceway, NASCAR announced on Wednesday.

Both teams received written warnings after the Jeff Kyle 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past weekend.

The No. 13 team of Mears failed qualifying inspection twice and the No. 31 team of Newman failed pre-race inspection twice, both resulting in a warning.

A P1 level penalty is issued if a team receive stwo written warnings during one event, or a single warning during two consecutive events. These penalties can result in deduction of time on the track for practice, such as, in this case, a delay in the order of inspection or the last choice in the pit selection process.

Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, Paul Menard, and Ryan Blaney's teams were all issued warnings at the previous weekend's race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but did not earn one at Indy, so they won't receive a P1 level penalty.
