Ryan Newman entered this year’s Chase as the underdog, so he’s not feeling any pressure heading into the final three races of the season.

“I don’t have any pressure,” Newman said with a smile during his Friday afternoon media availability at Texas Motor Speedway. When asked what he’s doing to avoid the pressure he joked, “I medicate myself? I don’t know.”

NASCAR changed the format of the Chase for this year, introducing elimination rounds in an effort to make winning more important.

Newman has yet to win a race in 2014, but has consistently finished well enough to be a factor in this year’s playoffs. He figures he can keep using the same formula and be conservative in the next two races before the Homestead finale.

“You only have to be aggressive as you need to be. If you have a dominant race car, you don’t need to be aggressive.”
