Report: D-Backs met with Cueto's agent
The Arizona Diamondbacks need pitching this fall, and they're already exploring potential candidates to enhance their rotation.
D-Backs executives met with right-hander Johnny Cueto's agent, Bryce Dixon, last week, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
However, Cueto may command a deal north of what Arizona is willing to pay, notes Rosenthal. The Diamondbacks are willing to spend up to $18 million annually on a starting pitcher to headline their rotation, and with Cueto expected to earn more than $20 million annually on a multi-year deal, he may not be a fit in the desert.
Cueto, 29, struggled after being acquired by the Kansas City Royals for the stretch run last year, but he turned in an incredible complete-game performance in Game 2 of the World Series to silence his critics. He compiled an 11-13 record with a 3.44 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 32 starts between the Cincinnati Reds and Royals during the regular season.
The 2014 All-Star is considered one of the elite hurlers available on the free-agent market along with David Price and Zack Greinke.
