World Series odds: 3 teams to consider before free-agent frenzy

Rick Scuteri / USA TODAY Sports

Everyone's looking for a deal on Black Friday, and baseball bettors are no exception.

With a flurry of free-agent signings expected over the next month, World Series odds will fluctuate dramatically as some of the big names come off the market, so now's the time to project where some of the top free agents will land and take advantage of the odds as they stand now.

Here are three teams to consider betting sooner rather than later:

Chicago Cubs: 10-1

The Cubs have the best odds along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and Houston Astros heading into the winter meetings, but they could easily separate themselves from the pack if they land a top pitcher as expected. If Joe Maddon and David Price are reunited this fall, Chicago's World Series odds will jump considerably because of its three-headed monster consisting of Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, and Price. This team exceeded expectations with a young roster last year, and will surely be a popular wager with the betting public all season long.

St. Louis Cardinals: 14-1

It's hard to imagine a postseason without the Cardinals. St. Louis has played October baseball for five consecutive years, and seemingly finds a way to win no matter who's on its roster. Yes, Jason Heyward and John Lackey may end up elsewhere next season, but Adam Wainwright will be back at full strength, and the Cardinals will surely be in the bidding for a few high-profile free agents, such as Chris Davis and Ben Zobrist. This team could be a steal as a mid-range option at 14-1, and its odds are likely to creep closer to 10-1 by Opening Day.

Arizona Diamondbacks: 40-1

The Diamondbacks are clearly a long shot, but there's reason to believe they can contend in 2016. Arizona very quietly earned 15 more wins last season than it did in 2014, and ranked in the top 10 in the majors in a number of offensive categories including runs per game (eighth), batting average (seventh), OPS (ninth), and stolen bases (second). This team has major holes to fill in its rotation, though, but with a pitching-rich free-agent class, general manager Dave Stewart could make his club a dark horse to capture a wild-card berth by signing a couple of starters. Anything can happen in the postseason, and a 40-1 payday is enticing if you gamble on the D-Backs as a Cinderella team.

Here are the World Series odds for all 30 teams:
