The Chicago Cubs finally gave their fans something to cheer about.

Tuesday's 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals not only marks the Cubs' first trip to the National League Championship Series since 2003, but it's the first time in franchise history they've celebrated a playoff-series clincher at home.

The long-awaited celebration - 139 years in the making - got underway immediately at Wrigley Field after Hector Rondon struck out Stephen Piscotty to clinch the NLDS.

''They deserve it,'' first baseman Anthony Rizzo said during the postgame celebration. ''Hopefully, this is just a taste of what's to come.''

The Cubs' woes at home were particularly stark during the 2003 playoffs when the team lost three potential series clinchers at Wrigley Field, including the infamous Steve Bartman game against the Florida Marlins.

''I think we're too young to even realize what we just did,'' Kris Bryant said. ''It truly is a special time right now.''

After knocking out the top-seeded team in baseball, the Cubs also helped expedite the end of another long-standing drought. With the Cardinals eliminated, the most recent championship-winning team left in the playoffs is the Toronto Blue Jays, who won the second of back-to-back titles in 1993.

''I can only imagine what the next thing is going to look like,'' Jon Lester told reporters. ''And the next thing after that.''
