Mets' deGrom sets multiple records in postseason debut

Jacob deGrom had a tall task going up against Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night in their National League Division Series opener, but to say he exceeded expectations in his postseason debut would be a huge understatement.

The New York Mets righty tossed seven shutout innings and struck out a franchise record-tying 13 batters. He also set the record for the most strikeouts ever in a postseason debut.

"To have him go out there against Clayton (Kershaw) tonight and win the game is a huge lift for us," Mets manager Terry Collins said postgame. "This is a good start for a team that hadn't been in the postseason for a long time. We needed a confidence boost and Jake gave it to us."

deGrom now shares the Mets record with Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, who struck out 13 Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the 1973 NLCS.
