Cubs add Hammel, cut Berry from NLDS roster

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs' 25-man roster for the National League Division Series will look slightly different than the one manager Joe Maddon used for the wild-card game, with Jason Hammel added to the squad in lieu of outfielder Quintin Berry.

Otherwise, Maddon will carry a familiar bunch into the best-of-five matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals set to begin Friday at Busch Stadium, where a pair of former teammates - John Lackey and Jon Lester - will square off in Game 1.

The versatility of Maddon's roster, incidentally, was apparent in Wednesday's wild-card game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, wherein a number of Chicago's young stars played out of position. Kris Bryant, the presumed NL rookie of the Year, started in left field after logging 144 games at third base during the regular season, while fellow rookie Kyle Schwarber started in right field, a position he played just four times in 2015.
