David Ortiz's second-half surge is moving him up the all-time home run list in a hurry.

The Boston Red Sox slugger hit his way into sole possession of 27th on the career leaderboard by blasting his 494th home run during the sixth inning of Sunday's game against the New York Mets.

The two-run drive broke a three-way tie with Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff.

Sunday's milestone homer was Ortiz's 28th of the season and 13th since the All-Star break. The hot-hitting slugger entered Sunday batting .345/.427/.679 in August with seven homers and seven doubles in 84 at-bats.

The 39-year-old has now passed Chipper Jones, Carlos Delgado, Willie Stargell, and Stan Musial this season, in addition to the aforementioned pair, as he inches closer to joining the exclusive 500-homer club. He's 10 away from matching Eddie Murray for 26th on the all-time list.
