The Seattle Mariners have traded pitcher Fernando Rodney to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Rodney, who was designated for assignment Saturday, will join the Cubs' bullpen Friday.

The 38-year-old right-hander struggled in his second season with the Mariners, posting a 5.68 ERA in 54 appearances after saving 48 games for the squad a season ago.

Rodney has accumulated 236 saves in his career, including a remarkable 2012 season with the Tampa Bay Rays, with whom he boasted a 0.60 ERA.

"I was there for that year when he had the best in history," Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters. "He has the kind of stuff to get out both righties and lefties. I know he had trouble or struggled a bit this year, but I'm eager to see him in person and find out what's going on.

"He still has a good fastball, outstanding changeup and is a great teammate. He's a lot of fun to have on the team. I'm looking forward to it."

In corresponding moves, the Cubs optioned pitcher Zac Rosscup and designated pitcher Brian Schlitter for assignment.
