Marlins' Stanton expected quicker recovery from broken hamate bone

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins are going to have to be patient as they await the return of slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

Stanton, who broke the hamate bone in his left hand and underwent surgery June 28, is recovering slower than he expected, but says the healing process is moving in the right direction.

"Getting decent - the ball's coming off OK," Stanton told MLB.com's Steve Wilaj. "It's just the pain level of it."

The outfielder has missed 28 games with the injury, which occurred when he took a big rip at a Brett Anderson pitch in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 26.

"I have to swing off the tee with no pain first, then we'll go from there," Stanton said. "I don't know when that will be. I'm just doing what I'm supposed to every day."

Prior to the injury, Stanton was hitting .265/.346/.606 with a league-leading 27 home runs and 67 RBIs.
