Blue Jays designate Carrera, Valencia for assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays' fury of roster additions has come at the cost of a pair of veteran players.

Outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and utility man Danny Valencia were designated for assignment Saturday, one day after the team acquired reliever Mark Lowe and outfielder Ben Revere at the non-waiver trade deadline.

Reliever Ryan Tepera was also optioned to Triple-A, while infielder Munenori Kawasaki was recalled to take the place of injured second baseman Devon Travis.

The 30-year-old Valencia is hitting .296/.331/.506 with seven home runs, 13 doubles, and 29 RBIs in 58 games while appearing at five different positions.

"It (was) a very difficult decision and Gibby (manager John Gibbons) wanted Revere to be in left field every day," general manager Alex Anthopoulos told reporters.

Carrera appeared in 70 games in the outfield, slashing .279/.327/.374 with three home runs, five doubles, and 21 RBIs.
