Pirates place Burnett on DL with elbow inflammation

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-hander A.J. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list Friday with left elbow inflammation.

The 38-year-old - who made his first career All-Star game this year - struggled in his last start, giving up 10 hits and 7 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

Burnett's spot should be covered by Pirates' deadline-day acquisition J.A. Happ, who went 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA in 20 starts this season for the Seattle Mariners.

Also on Friday, the Pirates designated right-hander Deolis Guerra for assignment to make room for newly acquired reliever Joakim Soria. Guerra has allowed 12 runs in 16 2/3 innings of relief in his first MLB season.

The team also recalled left-hander Bobby LaFromboise from Triple-A Indianapolis.
