The Chicago Cubs added a veteran starter to their deep rotation Friday afternoon, acquiring right-hander Dan Haren from the Miami Marlins less than four hours before the non-waiver trade deadline.

In exchange for Haren, a three-time All-Star, the Marlins will receive a pair of minor leaguers from the Cubs, 25-year-old shortstop Elliot Soto and 23-year-old right-hander Ivan Pineyro.

Though Haren wasn't thrilled when the Los Angeles Dodgers traded him to Miami this winter, the 34-year-old has enjoyed a nice resurgence with the Marlins. Over 21 starts this season, Haren owns a 3.42 ERA (112 ERA+) - his best since 2011 - with a 3.52 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 129 innings.

Cubs projected rotation:

Pitcher ERA IP SO WHIP
Jon Lester 3.26 132.2 136 1.16
Jake Arrieta 2.62 140.2 147 1.01
Jason Hammel 3.20 112.1 112 1.02
Dan Haren 3.42 129 88 1.09
Kyle Hendricks 3.81 115.2 97 1.16

Sitting 13 games back of the division lead, however, the Marlins started unloading their veterans earlier this month, shipping closer Steve Cishek to St. Louis last week before parting ways with both Mat Latos and Michael Morse in a 13-player deal Thursday.

The Cubs, meanwhile, will slot Haren into the back of a rotation that has dominated through the first four months of the season, posting a 3.52 ERA (3.24 FIP) while accumulating more wins above replacement than all but two teams.
