Hunter Pence, the wonderfully spastic outfielder, returned to the San Francisco Giants' lineup Tuesday night much earlier than expected after landing on the disabled list in June with tendinitis in his wrist.

It took him about two hours to reclaim his status as the Giants' most beloved player.

In the top of the sixth inning, Pence sent the crowd at AT&T Park into a frenzy when he laid out for a sliding catch on a fly ball off the bat of Ruben Tejada before uncorking a perfect strike to the plate to nail Curtis Granderson as he attempted to tag up from third base.

Pence's superb throw accounted for his first outfield assist of the season and preserved the Giants' 3-0 lead over the Mets.
