Royals land 4 starters in All-Star Game, Donaldson sets voting record

John Rieger / USA TODAY Sports

The time has finally come to reveal this year's All-Star Game starters after 65 consecutive days of exclusive online fan voting.

Here's a look at the National and American League players that will be honored as starters on the field at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati on July 14:

NL Starters

Position Player Team
C Buster Posey Giants
1B Paul Goldschmidt Diamondbacks
2B Dee Gordon Marlins
3B Todd Frazier Reds
SS Jhonny Peralta Cardinals
OF Bryce Harper Nationals
OF Giancarlo Stanton Marlins
OF Matt Holliday Cardinals

The hometown Reds will have a representative taking the field at first pitch. Todd Frazier, who is on pace for a career-year, is headed to the All-Star Game where he'll make his first start and second appearance.

Although Frazier is a feel-good storyline, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper stole the show, to no one's surprise. The 22-year-old broke the NL voting record with 13.8 million votes, making his second start and third appearance in as many seasons.

The interesting part of the NL team, though, will be who replaces Giancarlo Stanton and Matt Holliday, who are both nursing injuries.

AL Starters

Position Player Team
C Salvador Perez Royals
1B Miguel Cabrera Tigers
2B Jose Altuve Astros
3B Josh Donaldson Blue Jays
SS Alcides Escobar Royals
OF Mike Trout Angels
OF Lorenzo Cain Royals
OF Alex Gordon Royals
DH Nelson Cruz Mariners

When all was said and done, the All-Royals team wasn't meant to be.

That being said, four Kansas City players, Alex Gordon, Sal Perez, Lorenzo Cain, and Alcides Escobar made the starting nine in deserving fashion.

Nevertheless, Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson ran away with fan voting this year, setting an All-Star voting record with 14,090,188 votes - 80,000 more than Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout.

The reserves for both squads will be revealed Monday.
