Athletics hope Gray will be released from hospital Wednesday after bout of gastroenteritis
The Oakland Athletics remain optimistic right-hander Sonny Gray will be released from hospital Wednesday after spending the last two nights hampered by a severe bout of bacterial gastroenteritis, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Gray, who was scratched from Tuesday's start against the Colorado Rockies, reported improvement after receiving IV fluids and antibiotics, though it remains unclear when he'll return to the rotation.
"It should be relatively swift," Dr. Allan Pont said of Gray's return. "He's rounding into shape."
Despite losing a bit of weight over the last couple days, Gray could still take the ball for Sunday's scheduled start against the Seattle Mariners. The Athletics, however, won't make a roster decision regarding right-hander Chris Bassitt until determining whether Gray is able to pitch Sunday.
Bassitt, a 16th-round pick in the 2011 draft, allowed just one run while striking out three over five innings in Gray's absence, though the Athletics fell 2-1.
