Giants designate McGehee for assignment: 'I've got a lot left in the tank'

Pablo Sandoval's replacement at third base for the San Francisco Giants didn't even make it to June.

The team designated Casey McGehee for assignment Sunday after the 32-year-old hit .200/.254/.282 with two home runs and 24 strikeouts in 35 games.

"I feel I've got a lot left in the tank," McGehee told reporters. "I'm pretty sure yesterday was not the last baseball game I've played."

Following Sandoval's departure for the Boston Red Sox, the Giants scrambled to fill the hole at third base by acquiring McGehee from the Miami Marlins.

McGehee attempted to temper Giants' fans expectations after replacing a three-time World Series winner, but a .183 average through his first 21 games resulted in the home fans booing McGehee during a game earlier in the month.

"I have no hard feelings toward anybody who got on me last night," McGehee told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Gate on May 5. "There were times last night, if I were up there, I'd have booed myself. I'm looking forward to the day I get things going and the boos turn around."

McGehee, who slashed .287/.355/.357 and finished fourth in the National League with 177 hits in 2014, is owed $4.8 million this season. He's yet to decide whether or not he'll accept an assignment to Triple-A.

"That's not a decision I feel I'm capable of making in 10 minutes," McGehee said. "There's other people involved, my family. When I'm here I try to play for the team and do what the team asks, but as far as life, you've got another team you've got to consider and that's your wife and your kids.

"I told (Bruce Bochy) and Bobby both, there's a lot of good here. It's obvious the team's playing good, it's a great organization, it's home, pretty much, for me. There's a lot of good here. So I've got some things to think about."

Forcing the issue to move McGehee came from the strong play of Matt Duffy, as the 24-year-old is hitting .299/.330/.402 with a pair of home runs in 31 games.
