Tigers' Verlander to throw simulated game Tuesday

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander appears to be nearing his return to the mound as he continues to work his way back from a triceps injury that has kept him out since late in spring training.

The veteran right-hander emerged from this week's extended bullpen session without any issues, and is now scheduled to work four innings in a simulated game Tuesday in Oakland, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News.

"I feel great, no issues and I am excited, very excited," the 32-year-old said prior to the Detroit's 6-2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night.

Should Verlander continue to progress at the rate he has of late, avoiding the kind of setbacks that further delayed his projected return in mid-April, the next step will likely be a few rehab starts in the minor leagues.

While he's coming off what was considered a down season by his standards, the six-time All-Star making his return would provide a significant boost to the Tigers' rotation.

Having posted a 26-17 record through 42 games to start the year, Detroit currently sits two games behind the Kansas City Royals for the top spot in the American League Central Division.
