Athletics' Zobrist to miss a few days with knee soreness: 'It's a little disconcerting'

The Oakland Athletics will be without second baseman Ben Zobrist for at least the next several days as he deals with soreness in his left knee.

Zobrist left Sunday's game in the fifth inning after banging his knee on a slide and had an MRI on Monday. He is set to receive a cortisone shot.

"I know it's not normal, so in that regard, it's a little disconcerting," Zobrist told Jane Lee of MLB.com. "I'm disappointed right now that I'm not in the lineup, and I definitely want to feel 100 percent, and I'm not there. ... We'll see how it reacts.

"If it reacts well and I feel I can really move out there and contribute, then I'll give it a go. If not, then we'll have to give it more time."

The 33-year-old has dealt with past cartilage issues in his knees and acknowledged he may need to change the way he slides in order to prevent further damage.

"I slide so hard on it," Zobrist said. "I've had times where it was sore, but never where I felt like it was really limiting my range, until yesterday. I'm not going to stay in the game if I feel like I can't make a play for the team."

Zobrist, who has appeared in at least 150 games in five of the past six seasons, is hitting .267/.320/.444 with five doubles and one home run in 12 games this season.
