Giants' Peavy lands on DL with back injury

A lingering back injury has landed San Francisco Giants right-hander Jake Peavy on the disabled list.

The 33-year-old, who was scratched from a start earlier this month with back tightness, could not make it past the fourth inning during his outing Friday as a result of his back stiffening up.

"I saw it coming," Peavy told Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News. "The way my hip is, it's causing my back to be out of alignment and to spasm, and it's not letting go. The start in San Diego (on April 12), you saw the later the game went, the sharpness began to fall off. I've got to get it right. I'm not doing anybody any favors fighting through this thing."

Peavy's injury could not have come at a worse time for the 3-9 Giants, as right-hander Matt Cain is already on the DL.

The three-time All-Star has been bothered by his back since the start of the season, leading to an 0-2 record and 9.39 ERA through his first two outings.

The Giants activated Andrew Susac in a corresponding move.
