Dr. Andrews confirms MCL sprain for Nationals' Rendon; will seek 3rd opinion

Though few doctors wield more esteem in the professional sports community than Dr. James Andrews, the orthopedist's opinion was insufficient for Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Hampered by discomfort in his knee since March 9, Rendon sought a second opinion from Andrews after being diagnosed with a sprained medial collateral ligament. Rendon, however, will seek a third opinion from a knee specialist in Colorado after Andrews confirmed the diagnosis Tuesday, according to Mark Zuckerman of CSNWashington.

At this point, however, it seems increasingly unlikely that Rendon will be ready for Opening Day as the 24-year-old appears headed for a stint on the disabled list. The Nationals will even start Yunel Escobar at third for Tuesday's Grapefruit League game, a clear indication that Rendon isn't particularly close to returning.

"We have to look at all the options we have," manager Matt Williams said.

Williams also mentioned, meanwhile, that Ryan Zimmerman is not an option to return to third base in Rendon's absence. Zimmerman, a former Gold Glove award winner at third base, transitioned to first base this spring and the club remains pleased with his performance thus far.
