Brewers have 'a number of things going' on in terms of acquiring a reliever

The Milwaukee Brewers have not limited themselves in their search for another bullpen arm.

Despite the signing of left-hander Neal Cotts to a one-year deal on Friday, assistant general manager Gord Ash still has a few more iron's in the fire.

"I still think you want to add another veteran if you can," Ash told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "What that looks like right now, I don't know. Is it a closer or a guy with some closing experience? Is it a guy with middle or long relief so you have some protection there? We're juggling a lot of balls right now."

The Brewers were said to be in serious discussions of acquiring closer Jonathan Papelbon from the Philadelphia Phillies, though talks have appeared to cool over the week.

"I don't think it's dead," Ash said. "I don't think anything is imminent. We've got a number of things going. It's just a matter of trying to ascertain the best approach and what makes the best sense from a lineup point of view and financial point of view."

Francisco Rodriguez, Rafael Soriano, Joba Chamberlain, Phil Coke and Dustin McGowan represent the top echelon of relievers remaining on the free-agent market.

Rodriguez spent last season with the Brewers, earning 44 saves while fashioning a 3.04 ERA and earning his first All-Star appearance since 2009.
