Report: Phillies close to deal with Wandy Rodriguez

Injuries limited Wandy Rodriguez to just six starts last season, but it appears he may get a chance to revive his career with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rodriguez, a 14-year veteran, is reportedly close to a deal with the Phillies and is traveling to Philadelphia for a physical examination, according the team's Spanish play-by-play broadcaster Angel Ibo Castillo.

Despite failing to record even 65 innings in each of the last two seasons, Rodriguez would likely contend for a spot in Philadelphia's rotation this spring following the departure of A.J. Burnett and a possible trade involving Cole Hamels still looming.

Rodriguez, though, has done little in recent years to demonstrate he's capable of handling a hefty workload. Knee inflammation sidelined him in June after just six outings with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the seasoned southpaw spent roughly four months on the disabled list in 2013 due to elbow problems.

He didn't enjoy any success while on the mound last season, either, managing a 6.75 ERA with a 1.69 WHIP over six starts, yielding 10 home runs in just 26 2/3 innings.
