Report: Giants could trade for Rays' Zobrist

The San Francisco Giants replaced departed third baseman Pablo Sandoval by trading for Casey McGehee last week, but general manager Brian Sabean may still be looking to broker another deal before spring training arrives.

Several general managers think the Giants will swap prospects for Ben Zobrist of the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Peter Gammons. The Rays have already jettisoned several veteran players this offseason and with just one season remaining on his contract, Zobrist remains a likely trade candidate. Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported earlier this week that the 33-year-old could be moved by Opening Day.

Though the Giants' infield appears to be set for 2015, Zobrist boasts considerable experience in the outfield and represents a significant upgrade over Gregor Blanco, the club's tentative left fielder for next season. Zobrist - a two-time All-Star - hit .272/.354/.395 (116 OPS+) with 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases over 146 games in 2014, finishing tied for 12th in the majors in WAR.
