Report: Josh Johnson agrees to 1-year, incentive-laden contract with Padres

The San Diego Padres are banking on a pair of high-upside pitchers to help round out their offense-heavy makeover.

Josh Johnson reportedly agreed to terms Monday on a one-year, incentive-based deal that could pay the right-hander $7.25 million in 2015. Johnson joins former Toronto Blue Jays teammate Brandon Morrow - who also signed with the Padres this offseason - to fill out the back end of a promising rotation in San Diego.

The deal is said to be contingent on Johnson passing a physical.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports is reporting the $1-million contract for next season includes bonuses totaling $6.25 million.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported that Johnson and the Padres were close to completing a deal late last week.

Johnson, 30, signed with San Diego last winter in an effort to regain the form that made him one of baseball's top young arms, but an elbow injury suffered in April led to his second Tommy John surgery.

The two-time All-Star last appeared on a big-league mound in 2013 with the Blue Jays, suffering through a miserable 16 starts before a forearm strain shut him down for the final month and a half of the season.

Prior to arriving in Toronto, Johnson pitched to a 3.12 ERA with an 8.2 strikeout-per-nine rate during eight seasons with the Miami Marlins.
