Marlins' Hill to Haren: We want you to be part of the team

Just weeks after Dan Haren expressed an inclination to retire if he were to be traded this winter to a team located outside his native California, the 34-year-old was shipped to the Miami Marlins.

Haren has yet to decide whether he'll play next season in south Florida, but Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill recently assured the three-time All-Star that he wants him to stick around for the 2015 campaign.

"Mr. Haren, we extended the invitation and reached out to Dan and his representative," Hill told the Miami Sun-Sentinel. "We're respectful to his process and he's still working through it. We're going to give him the time he needs. I just continue to stress to him, 'This is a good team and we want you to be a part of it.' That's all I continue to stress with him, that's it's a good team and he would fit nicely. I left it at that."

Haren, a 12-year veteran, would assume a starting role on a substantially reconstructed team that recently added Mat Latos to its rotation - though Hill will be patient as he awaits word from the veteran right-hander.

"He'll make his decision," said Hill. "We haven't put any timelines on it."
