Sergio Romo: 'My heart is in San Francisco'

Ed Szczepanski / USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco Giants have agreed in principle to a two-year, $15-million deal with reliever Sergio Romo, who took to the airwaves Friday to express how happy he is to remain in the Bay Area.

"My heart is in San Francisco. I didn't want to have to pick up and start over," Romo told MLB Network Radio.

Romo revealed there were other teams offering him the opportunity to close, but also said he didn't receive a competitive offer that drew his interest more than leaving the Giants organization.

The right-hander lost his closer's job to setup man Santiago Casilla in late June, but his numbers drastically improved after being ousted from the role. The 31-year-old posted an impressive 1.80 ERA in 20 innings after the All-Star break, and yielded only one run in seven postseason innings for the world champs.

It's not unrealistic to think Romo - who has been an instrumental piece of three title runs in the past five years for the Giants - could be promoted to his former role should Casilla falter at some point during next season.
