Report: Orioles, Giants eyeing Torii Hunter
A pair of new teams have reportedly entered the Torii Hunter sweepstakes.
The Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants have the 39-year-old free-agent outfielder on their radar as a potential back-burner option, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.
Baltimore has widely been expected to re-sign free-agent right fielder Nick Markakis, which would likely close the door on a potential Hunter signing. The Orioles have Adam Jones in center and a number of options for left field including Steve Pearce, who could receive the majority of his at-bats out of the designated hitter spot.
Hunter could be a fit with the Giants if he agreed to move to left field as San Francisco has right fielder Hunter Pence under contract through the 2018 season.
An 18-year veteran, Hunter has also been linked to the Kansas city Royals, Minnesota Twins - who he began his career with - and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski recently said the team is unlikely to bring Hunter back after a two-year run with the club.
While Hunter's defense has predictably slipped as he's aged, he still has something to offer with his bat. Hunter has hit .295/.327/.456 with 34 homers over the last two seasons.
