Pirates designate Ike Davis for assignment, claim Pedro Florimon

Ike Davis's short tenure with the Pittsburgh Pirates came to a disappointing end on Thursday as the club designated the first baseman for assignment.

Acquired from the New York Mets in April, Davis hit .235/.343/.378 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs in 131 games for Pittsburgh while splitting time at first base with Gaby Sanchez.

The emergence of Josh Harrison at third base has pushed Pedro Alvarez across the diamond, making Davis expendable.

"I had (a) blast with (the) Pirates," Davis told Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune. "Everyone has decisions to make, and they made theirs. It comes down to spots. There's only one first baseman on a team. When you have three, there's going to be an odd man out. It was me."

In addition to the Davis move, the Pirates claimed shortstop Pedro Florimon off waivers from the Washington Nationals and added him to their 40-man roster.

The soon-to-be 28-year-old appeared in 167 games over the last two seasons with the Minnesota Twins, hitting .200/.265/.299 with nine home runs, 45 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.
