Brewers decline Rickie Weeks's $11.5M option

Second baseman Rickie Weeks is a free agent for the first time in his 11-year career.

The Milwaukee Brewers declined Weeks's $11.5-million club option Friday, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

Selected with the second pick in the 2003 draft, Weeks was one of the top second baseman in the majors from 2007-11, but has seen his production decline over the last three seasons.

After slashing .209/.306/.357 with 105 strikeouts in 104 games in 2013, Weeks bounced back in 2014 while splitting time at second with Scooter Gennett. In 121 games, he hit .274/.357/.452 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs.

With a thin crop of available free agents at the second-base position, Weeks is likely to generate interest this offseason as a full-time option.
