Red Sox's Castillo diagnosed with strained adductor muscle in thumb; may still play winter ball

Joy R. Absalon / USA TODAY Sports

Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington confirmed to reporters Thursday that Rusney Castillo was indeed shut down from play in the Arizona Instructional League due to an injury.

The Red Sox are hoping the Cuban import can play as much baseball over the winter as possible in preparation for the 2015 campaign.

Boston took a huge gamble on the 27-year-old outfielder, inking him to a seven-year, $72.5-million deal in August.

Castillo hit .333 with two home runs and six RBIs in 10 regular-season games once joining the big club.
