1973 - Tom Seaver wins Cy Young Award with less than 20 wins

New York Mets right-hander Tom Seaver wins the NL Cy Young Award after leading the league with a 2.08 ERA, 18 complete games and 251 strikeouts. He becomes the first pitcher to ever capture the honor without winning 20 games in a season.

Seaver took home the hardware again in 1975 to secure his third Cy Young Award over a seven-year span. A 12-time All-Star, Seaver was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1992.

2007 - New York Yankees hire Joe Girardi as new manager

The New York Yankees hire Joe Girardi as their new manager following a 94-68 season and first-round playoff exit. Girardi is the 34th manager in franchise history and replaces Joe Torre, who served as the skipper for 12 seasons and guided the Yankees to six World Series appearances.

Girardi returns to an organization he played four seasons with from 1996-99. The 50-year-old has been the Yankees' manager since, and helped lead New York to a World Series title in 2009.

2013 - Boston Red Sox win third title in 10 years

The Boston Red Sox win again, securing their third World Series title in 10 years after defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6 of the 2013 Fall Classic.

Boston hadn't won a World Series since 1918 before snapping an 86-year drought in 2004. The Red Sox won in 2007, as well.

Designated hitter David Ortiz is named MVP of the 2013 World Series after hitting a robust .688/.760/1.188 with two homers, six RBIs and eight walks.
