The Kansas City Royals staged a four-run rally in the top of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead on the San Francisco Giants in Game 4 of the World Series, but the inning will be forever remembered for one of the best bloopers of the season.
Royals pitcher Jason Vargas - who doesn't normally bat as an American League pitcher - came to the plate for the second time in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs. He thought he earned an easy RBI by drawing a walk after Jean Machi delivered a breaking ball outside.
The only problem: the count was only 2-2 prior to the pitch.
Vargas' attempt to walk on three balls sent his teammates into hysterics, but the mood quickly soured when he struck out looking on the next pitch.
