Pirates acquire Sellers from Indians; DFA Axford and Gomez

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a slew of moves on Saturday, acquiring utility infielder Justin Sellers from the Cleveland Indians before designating relievers John Axford and Jeanmar Gomez for assignment.

Sellers has struggled in limited action across four seasons in the majors, hitting .198/.280/.294 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 99 career games. The 28-year-old spent the bulk of this season with Triple-A Columbus, hitting .254/.307/.335 with 18 doubles and 40 RBIs. What Sellers lacks in offense, he makes up for with his defensive versatility, appearing at second base, shortstop, left field and third base in 2014.

Claimed off waivers by the Pirates in August, the walk happy Axford offered six free passes in 11 innings of relief in Pittsburgh, while posting a 4.09 ERA. The former Brewers closer who saved 46 games in 2011 has struggled since, posting a 4.24 ERA over the past three seasons.

Gomez served as a long reliever for the Bucs this season, posting a 3.19 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 62 innings.
