Friedman reinforces Mattingly will remain Dodgers manager next season despite Maddon leaving Rays

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Dodgers president of baseball operations and former Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman worked quickly Friday to squash rumors that the team is interested in acquiring manager Joe Maddon.

"As I said last week, Joe and I enjoyed a tremendous relationship working together in Tampa Bay and I wish him nothing but the best wherever his next stop will be. However, nothing has changed on our end Don Mattingly will be our manager next season and hopefully for a long time to come."

The knee-jerk reaction from the baseball world upon news of Maddon leaving the Rays was that the manager would rejoin Friedman in Los Angeles because of their previous working relationship.

It's the second time Friedman has stood behind Mattingly this offseason (see stack below) after the team's disappointing early exit from the playoffs.

Mattingly is under contract with the Dodgers through 2016.
