Royals' Yost: Shields to start potential Game 5

Jamie Square / USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is sticking with a struggling James Shields should the series reach a Game 5.

“I've been in this game a long time and I've seen guys struggle two, and three and four times and all of a sudden come out and throw a fantastic game," Yost said following Game 1. "He has the ability to make adjustments. He hasn't been as sharp as he's been, but with the extra rest and then coming back five days from now, we think it will benefit him."

The right-hander was chased in the fourth inning of Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday after surrendering five runs off seven hits in three innings to bring his 2014 postseason ERA to 7.11.

Shields, who hadn't pitched for 11 days prior to his outing in Game 1, said the layoff could have contributed to his struggles, but wasn't making excuses following the 7-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

"I just gotta bear down and get the job done," Shields said. "Hopefully I'll get another start."
