Cardinals likely to deal Choate during offseason

Left-handed reliever Randy Choate's days with the St. Louis Cardinals appear to be over.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals will look to move Choate during the offseason, as it proved to be too difficult to get the left-handed specialist enough work in 2014.

"I think in Choate’s case, for us, he’s fairly one-dimensional," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "That makes it difficult for us to use him, particularly during a long season."

Choate, who signed a three-year, $7.5 million deal in 2012, held left-handed hitters to a .093 average this season but was limited to 36 innings. The 39-year-old had a postseason to forget, allowing three runs (two earned) in one inning of work and committed the error in Game 3 of the NLCS that allowed the game-winning run.
