Diamondbacks confirm candidates for managerial opening

Former major-league catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. is among a list of candidates for the Arizona Diamondbacks' vacant managerial position, the team announced Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks also confirmed Jim Tracy, Jay Bell, Andy Green, Phil Nevin and Turner Ward are in the running for managerial positions with the club after it fired Kirk Gibson and bench coach Alan Trammell last week.

Additional candidates will be announced once the Diamondbacks receive permission from their current teams, the club said

Alomar has spent the past five seasons as a member of the Cleveland Indians' coaching staff. His only managerial experience came back in 2012 when he replaced Manny Acta for six games.

The 48-year-old played 20 seasons in the league, winning the 1990 American League Rookie of the Year and earning six All-Star selections.

Tracy possesses several years of managing experience, most recently serving as skipper for the Colorado Rockies from 2009 to 2012. The 58-year-old won National League Manager of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Rockies to a second-place finish in the NL West.

Bell is a local favorite for the position, having spent five seasons with the Diamondbacks as a player. The two-time All-Star enjoyed his most productive season in Arizona, hitting 38 homers and driving in 112 runs in 1999. He currently serves as the bench coach for the Cincinnati Reds.

The Diamondbacks later announced they received permission to interview Chicago White Sox third-base coach Joe McEwing for the position.
