Derek Jeter launches media company for athletes
Derek Jeter spent 20 years navigating through one of the most difficult media environments in sports. Now that he's retired, the former New York Yankees shortstop is looking to lend an assist to other players.
Jeter unveiled a new website Wednesday called "The Players' Tribune," which describes itself as a "new media platform that will present the unfiltered voices of professional athletes."
The 14-time All-Star said in a statement that he's looking to give fans more access to athletes – but without editorializing the message.
I realize I’ve been guarded. I learned early on in New York, the toughest media environment in sports, that just because a reporter asks you a question doesn’t mean you have to answer. I attribute much of my success in New York to my ability to understand and avoid unnecessary distractions.
I do think fans deserve more than “no comments” or “I don’t knows.” Those simple answers have always stemmed from a genuine concern that any statement, any opinion or detail, might be distorted. I have a unique perspective. Many of you saw me after that final home game, when the enormity of the moment hit me. I’m not a robot. Neither are the other athletes who at times might seem unapproachable. We all have emotions. We just need to be sure our thoughts will come across the way we intend.
Jeter also touched on his farewell tour, and the overwhelming support he received from around the league.
It’s the reception outside of New York that really was the biggest difference this year. I’ll never forget how the baseball fans across the country have treated me.
