Cardinals' Wainwright pulled after seven innings with hyperextended knee

Adam Wainwright was cruising, as he's seemingly been doing all season, pitching seven spotless innings, surrendering four hits and no walks, and throwing just 79 pitches.

But on the last play of the seventh inning, chasing an infield pop-up off the bat of Mets centerfielder Chris Young, Wainwright landed awkwardly, stumbled forward, and then hobbled towards the dugout.

He wouldn't come out to pitch the eighth, and was diagnosed with a hyperextended knee.

It's unclear how serious the hyperextension is, or whether Wainwright will have to miss any starts, but the Cardinals have to be concerned.

Wainwright, who finished second in NL Cy Young voting last season, collected the win to improve to 4-1 in 2014, while lowering his ERA to 1.46.
