Koji Uehara's return to Boston's bullpen is imminent, according to Sean McAdam of Comcast SportsNet, who notes the 39-year-old will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Shoulder soreness has sidelined Uehara for the last four games, though an MRI revealed no structural damage to his right arm. Uehara has yet to allow a run over five appearances this season, notching seven strikeouts while issuing no walks over five innings of work.

Report: Red Sox' Uehara expected to rejoin club Tuesday in Chicago

Apr 14, 5:22 PM

Boston Red Sox closer Koji Uehara is expected to rejoin the club Tuesday in Chicago for a three-game set with the White Sox, according to Zack Cox of NESN.

Uehara had an encouraging long-toss session Sunday despite a sore shoulder and manager John Farrell stated the workout went "better than he actually expected." An MRI on his Uehara's shoulder revealed no structural damage.

The next step for Uehara will be a bullpen session off the mound according to Farrell, who expects his closer to see game action at some point during the three-game set with the White Sox.

Uehara has yet to allow a run in five innings this season, striking out seven.

Red Sox' Uehara still dealing with sore shoulder, unavailable Saturday

After unexpectedly sitting out Friday night's ninth inning in a two-run save situation against the Yankees, Red Sox closer Koji Uehara has now been ruled out of Saturday's game as well.

Uehara has reportedly been feeling some discomfort in his throwing shoulder, but there's been no diagnosis beyond basic "stiffness." He may end up returning to Boston Saturday for more tests.

The 39-year old wonder from Osaka had arguably the best season ever for a closer in 2013, and so far this season seems to have picked up right where he left off. He's finished four games in 2014, pitching five shutout innings with seven strikeouts and zero walks.

Red Sox manager John Farrell: Koji Uehara dealing with shoulder stiffness

Apr 11, 10:33 PM

Edward Mujica surprisingly came on to close out Boston's 4-2 win over the New York Yankees on Friday night, prompting reporters to ask Red Sox manager John Farrell about the health of regular closer Koji Uehara.

Farrell is downplaying the injury, saying there are no tests planned on Uehara's shoulder. He is considered day-to-day.

Uehara was instrumental in Boston's World Series run a year ago and is off to a strong start this year, converting both of his save opportunities.
