The New York Yankees have signed former closer Andrew Bailey to a minor league deal, according to ESPN's Buster Onley.

Bailey spent the last two seasons as a reliever with the Boston Red Sox and was expected to takeover the teams closing duties in 2012 following the departure of Jonathan Papelbon to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Red Sox non-tendered his contract in December, making him a free agent after two seasons filled with poor performances and injuries.

His 2013 season was cut short when he was placed on the disabled list in July and had surgery to repair the right capsule in his right shoulder a week later.

He missed the first 116 games for the Red Sox in his first season after suffering a thumb injury that required surgery during Spring Training

Bailey, 29, was a two-time All-Star with the Oakland Athletics during his first two seasons in the majors and was the centerpiece of a trade with Boston in exchange for outfielder Josh Reddick and two minor leaguers.

The 2009 American League Rookie of the Year amassed 75 saves in three years with the Athletics and just 14 in two season's in Boston.
