Left-handed reliever Rich Hill, who spent parts of three seasons with the Red Sox from 2010 through 2012, is reportedly headed back to Boston:

Hill can also reportedly opt out of the deal if he doesn't make Boston's squad out of spring training, writes WEEI's Alex Speier.

Hill spent last year with the Indians and had a 6.28 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 38 2/3 innings. Those numbers don't tell the whole story, though. He had a 3.82 FIP, and 4.12 xFIP, and he struck out a ridiculous 11.87 per nine innings. He struggled with his control, though, finishing with a 6.75 walk rate. Left-handed hitters had a .696 OPS against him.

Hill will be 34 in March, and had a 1.14 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 31 2/3 innings for the Red Sox from 2010 through 2012, for whatever that's worth to you.

Hill has a career 106 ERA- and 97 FIP- in 465 2/3 innings big-league innings over nine years. There's something in that arm - he could be a LOOGY candidate. The Red Sox plan to find out.
