The next stop on infielder Ty Wigginton's baseball journey: Miami.

Wigginton, 36, is on the back-end of a 12-year career. He played 47 games for the Cardinals last year, hitting only .158/.238/.193, with no home runs and three RBI. The Cardinals released him in July, after signing him to a two-year deal worth $5 million in December 2012.

He has a 76 OPS+ in his last 172 games, going back to 2012 with the Pirates. There may not be much left in the tank. The Marlins are going to find out. Get it? Marlins? Tank? Oh, come on.

Wigginton's a bench option at this point in his career, and has a respectable .801 OPS, including a .351 on-base percentage, against left-handed pitching in his career. Used properly, he could help. He'd been discussed internally by the Blue Jays, writes Sportsnet's Shi Davidi, so it seems he had some options.

Wigginton's spent most of his career playing third base, though he can play around the infield. Marlins third basemen hit .248/.315/.300 last year, with only three home runs and 44 RBI. Based on those numbers, and even though the Marlins signed Casey McGehee, you'd have to think that with a good spring, Wigginton's got a shot to break camp with the Marlins as a utility man off the bench.
