Infielder Casey McGehee is headed back to North America after a year in Japan. He and the Marlins have agreed to a one-year deal, tweets the Miami Herald's Clark Spencer.

McGehee's deal is worth a reported $1.1 million, plus incentives. He made $1.5 million with Rakuten this past season, according to MLB Trade Rumors

McGehee, 31, burst onto the scene in the majors in 2009, with the Brewers, after making his big-league debut in 2008 with the Cubs. He had a .859 OPS in 2009, in 116 games, and finished fifth in voting for the National League Rookie of the Year award.

After a solid 2010, when McGehee posted an .801 OPS in 157 games for Milwaukee, he struggled. Traded to the Pirates in December 2011, McGehee split the 2012 season with Pittsburgh and the Yankees, and had a disappointing .643 OPS in 114 games. Then he was off to Japan.

McGehee, who can play third, second, and first base, has a career 94 wRC+, making him a slightly below-average hitter. He's an average defender, according to FanGraphs, but is at his defensive best at first base.
