Report: Yankees close with free-agent 2B Kelly Johnson

The Yankees, who reportedly added centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury mere hours ago, appear to on the verge of acquiring second baseman Kelly Johnson, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Sherman notes that Johnson could see regular playing time at second base if the club proves unable to re-sign Robinson Cano.

Johnson, who turns 32 in February, hit .235/.305/.410 with 16 home runs and 12 doubles over 118 games with the Rays in 2013.  An eight-year veteran, Johnson made at least two starts at four different positions last season, spending time at first base, third base, left field, and second base.
